Cloud

Cloud computing is a colloquial expression used to describe a variety of different computing concepts that involve a large number of computers that are connected through a real-time communication network (typically the Internet).

So that is the technical term, but what is the cloud really and is it really all what the industry is saying. Well I personally think that it’s is a great concept and I can see more and more business eventually adopting this technology as the norm within there business.

There are a number of technologies that can be placed in the cloud, or into the Internet as we have seen above. So we’re do you start, well, l would advise that if you are still sceptical of what the cloud has to offer, start small and think about an area or application you can move into the cloud, moving some of your applications on to a hosted server, or look at sending some backups to the cloud could be a good starting point. When we look at the cost savings you can achieve through cloud computing too just what can it give and can it give real time savings, again, at the moment it’s all down personnel opinion, some people agree and some dont. I belive it does offer some really good savings. I would say if you we’re going to spend 200k on hardware within your infrastructure, why not move that capital purchase into an operational purchase, so that big initial investment is gone and spread into a manageable investment..

I recently attended a communications event in London and talked to a number of panelists about Cloud, mobile based computing and the fact that only 10% of the industry has adopted cloud as a way of running there communications and IT shows that its still not trusted.. Think about when Virtualisation first came on the scene, no one trusted it and the concept was feared by all, it now dominates the way in which we run our servers and even desktop environments.

There are even rumours that Microsoft will eventually stop selling MS office In a bid to force users into using the Office 365 Product.

I think we can all see cloud in some way will eventually become the way in which we deliver infrastructure, so if you want to be guided through it , or want some help in delivering cloud based solutions, come and talk to us.

Thanks

Stephen
